San Francisco, CA – May 22, 2009 – America’s Opportunity Fund (AOF) Chair, former Cabinet Secretary Norman Mineta congratulate State Board of Equalization Vice Chairwoman Judy Chu for her victory in Tuesday’s California primary election.
“I would like to congratulate Judy for running a successful campaign,” said Mineta. Judy Chu, campaigned on her experience and deep relationships within the district and worked to building partnerships across ethnic lines. “We are proud to have supported Judy and will continue to do so”, Mineta added.
Judy Chu was elected to the California State Board of Equalization in November 2006. Earlier this year, she was unanimously elected Vice Chair of the Board of Equalization. In 2001, Chu was elected to the California State Assembly. She represents a Southern California district in the San Gabriel Valley that includes the cities of Alhambra, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, South El Monte, San Gabriel, and San Marino. Prior to serving in the State Assembly, Chu served on the Monterey Park City Council for thirteen years starting from 1988 to 2001, and served as Mayor of the city three times.
Aside from receiving support from AOF, Judy Chu had backing from Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Rep. Diane Watson (D-Los Angeles) and a host of elected officials from San Gabriel Valley cities and school boards.
Chu will now face the runoff on July 14 special general election for the seat that former incumbent Hilda L. Solis vacated in February to become President Barack Obama ’s Labor secretary. The 32nd District, located in east Los Angeles and some near-in suburbs, is overwhelmingly Democratic.
